Thanks for the response. The target OS platform is MS Windows. There are no
bookmarks, hyperlinks or other elements in the Word files except text and
fonts. What do you think would be the best tool for the task? Thanks!

         On what OS platform?   What quality of Word conversion 
fidelity?  Do you only want "flat" documents, or also features such as 
bookmarks, hyperlinks, structure, etc?

         The general answer is that the BEST conversion will be to use Word 
somewhere in the process - any other option will only lead to 
less-than-perfect results.
