Thanks Paulo,

I actually found the issue.  I had a watermark set for the page (full page
sized...basically white bg with a thin border around the page).  As soon as
I removed the watermark the background color showed up.  I'm guessing the
watermark in some way alters all tables to have a transparent bg because the
watermark is supposed to show through??

Anyways I got it working ;-)
