Is there a way to downsample an existing PDF document resp. the contained images?
You can't do this with iText - it doesn't have all the necessary "plumbing".
If you want to do this in Java (it WILL be slow and painful due to memory usage issues), try Multivalent.
OR look at some of the commercial solutions that can do this for you.
