Subject: [iText-questions] [signature] - Acrobat Reader 7.0 complains about
modification of a signed PDF

Hi folks,

I signed a PDF document using itext-paulo-153 and JDK 1.4.2. Acrobat
Reader 7.0 complains that the signature is okay but the document has
changed (3 misc changes) ... this is the same problem that Joachim
Kerschbaumer had in February (hello, by the way).

+) Paulo meant this has something to do with the certificate so I tested
it with two different certificates to no avail - I agree that the A-CERT
certificate is touchy so I used a webtrust.de certificate as well

The problem was with the german version of Acrobat Reader 7. The icon didn't
match the text. The english version was ok.

Correct  - the german text is really broken but even the English version of Acrobat Reader 7.0 states that there were miscellanous changes not affecting the signature. Check out  Validate Signature/Signature Properties Button/Document Tab/Compute Modification List Button:

+) I get 1 miscellanous change for the visible signature for my signed PDF
+) I get 3 miscellanous change for the invisible signature for my signed PDF
+) Using the same certificate with Acrobat 6.0/7.0 does not report any changes

So the signature is valid but the changes to a read-only document are confusing .... :-(

+) I signed the same PDF manually with Acrobat Writer 6.0 and 7.0 and
this problem does not appear

You may not be signing the same way as iText.

Well, I used the same certificate and signed the whole document

+) Not being lazy I tested it with the german and english version of
Acrobat Reader but this doesn't make any difference

It did in the case of Joachim.

+) Quite interestingly the number of changes are depending on the usage
of visible/invisible signature. I assumed that the Acrobat Reader 7.0
might tinker around depending on the PDF version so I enforced writing
out PDF 1.5

+) This problem does not appear when using Acrobat Reader 6.0 - so this
problem might be introduced with PDF 1.6 and Acrobat 7.0?!

Show us the pdfs and the steps you took to sign them.

I send you the PDFs and the source code directly to you to avoid flooding the mailing list

Has anyone an idea what's going on?!

Thanks in advance
