Encryption was added somewhere between version 0.51 and 0.70.
I took a look at SourceForge. The oldest iText version you can download
is 0.87
(0.87 dates from march 2002 while 0.51 dates from september 2001).
Instead of trying to implement encryption based on the current version,
wouldn't it make sense to test if upgrading to 0.87 works with your
application?
It's just a thought.
