So JASPER is another layer of abstraction on top of ITEXT. Actually we got legacy code that we are dealing with and it used JASPER. We do have the tool iReport to create reports etc, but using the tool forces us to create plenty of data structure to populate the report fields. may be we are unable to use the tool to the fullest extent. But so far our obeservation is : We could not use our regular POJOs representing the table data. Also we ran into memory issues since we could not render the report as we are fetching the records from the database. We are increasing tomcat memory to resolve the issue.
We have just started to use the ITEXT and we do see that we don't have to create additional data structures for the report. We just have to write significant code for the layout of the report. Which again since we have standrard format for the report, creating utility code for creating similar PdfpCells is helping us reduce the number of lines
of code
for the actual report layout.
For creating tabular report what do you folks prefer JASPER or ITEXT? Can you shed some light on when will you prefer JASPER and when to use ITEXT? Our team likes to work with the actual code rather than framework just in case the framework missed out on some feature or we missed out on the understanding part.

JasperReports uses iText for PDF generation,
so you have been using iT ext all along.
Both products are complementary.
