How do Acrobat Reader, or Ghostscript show a thumbnail?

         Illustrator is NOT a PDF Editor.

         When you open a PDF in AI, it performs a LOSSY CONVERSION.

         If you want to check what is in the PDF - use a PDF 
editor/viewer.  Acrobat.  Ghostscript.  Xpdf, etc.
