The functionality I need seems to be present in ghostscript. Carsten
Hammer wrote pscolor as a contrib programme for ghostscript (in the
contrib folder of the source distro) which I should be able to adapt
(with great difficulty but that is my fault for never learning c
properly!) to get what I want. There may be some problems with this
approach, and gs 8.50 seemed to bork at heaps of my pdfs if they
weren't "optimised" by acrobat, but the results look exactly like what
we want. If I can get something usable I will post a link.
