Replacement characters make sense for the a viewer but not for a PDF
producer. The producer knows beforehand if the character exists or not
and can choose to replace it with something else or nothing. The viewer
has a logical representation of the string and only when rendering knows
if some particular character exists or not; a decision must be made and
it may replace the missing char with .notdef. This replacement is only
visual but for the producer the replacement would also be logical.
