        I don't think you realize how complex a process this can be - 
esp. for complex PDF documents with things such as shadings & 
patterns.

        You need a library that will give you access to each object & 
it's color information.  You need to be able to create new pages that 
contain "partial objects" in grayscale.

        The only publicly available library that I know of that gives 
you this level of detail is the Adobe PDFLibrary.
