Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand how this patch
could contribute
to the "Certified-PDF" issue.
If we don't change the way approval-signature are applied to
"certified-pdfs",
 this is IMHO useless.
I recall you that currently with iText, signatures are applied through
the creation of a NEW
signature field (hiding the original one), whilst certified-PDFs
require that signatures be applied by filling
(reusing) an existing signature-field.

I agree that this change should be the first step for creating
certified-pdfs,
but then, how to add approval-signatures ?

* Another note:

I think that the name of "isCertified" method (from
PdfSignatureAppearance) is
misleading (and maybe useless as a public method);
Currently this method applies not to the (original) document; it is
for the signature
I'm going to add. In this case, I *know* I'm adding a signature (with
a given certificationLevel),
and then I have no need to to query for it
( ... is the signature I'm going to add a certification-signature ? )

Moreover, the proposed changes are not compatible with previous apps (
the new method has different params).

I support Paulo's request for a method for checking the certification-
level of an existing document.
I think there should be a method like "getCertificationLevel()" for
the PdfReader class, and then a specific method (maybe with the same
name) within the AcroFields class.
I mean, I should be able to check with a simple call:
  a)  is the document I'm reading a certified-document ( and which is
the certification-level) ?
  b)  is the AcroField I'm examining a certification-signature-field ?
