Yes, in old versions of Acrobat (and other PDF viewers),
the Type 1 font was shipped with the product.

Yes, you will have a hard time finding those old versions I just
referred too, because nowadays the availability of one of the
formerly called 'base 14 fonts' means that there is a font available
on the OS that is an exact replica of the Type 1 font.

If you use one of the standard Type 1 fonts in your PDF, you can
safely assume that the text will be rendered the way you expect it.
However the viewer may choose to use a TTF font instead of a Type 1
font.

Maybe you can find the PFB in very old Acrobat Reader version,
BUT: make sure you read the license information. It's not because
a font is shipped with Adobe Reader (for instance if you download
a font pack) for free, that you automatically have the right to
embed the font in your PDF documents.
