I understand that the awt fonts are mapped to BaseFonts in this class. But who passes these awt fonts to this class? The required font is not being passed to this class so there is no question of mapping it

There's a mapping in DefaultFontMapper between the awt font name and the pdf font name. You have to make sure that the pdf font or an alias has the same name.
