I know it's frustrating, but it IS a configuration problem on your side.
If you start from scratch, installing Tomcat on a new machine, adding
the correct jar to the CLASSPATH, the problem won't occur.
I'm running the book examples on tomcat on itext.ugent.be
and at Ghent University we even have different versions of iText
running next to each other on good old JSERV (even though it's
been discontinued). We could only help you with this if we were
actually sitting at your desk...
