Thanks.  Will it be easy to construct a new PDF and merging the two
documents, instead of merging new content on each page with a
PdfStamper?

No, I don't expect this ability.  There are complicated objects involved
anyway, such as images and typeset mathematics to which the idea of a
"line number" wouldn't apply in a straightforward way.  I simply want a
a "line number ruler" down the margin of the page for human reference.
