This author has developed a compiled class, ScaleAndTile, that scales and tiles
an image/PDF, producing a scaled PDF, as well as a PDF with a set of 8"x10.5"
tiles of the scaled image/PDF. The compiled class is packaged as an executable
JAR file, separate from the iText library that it uses.
JelleB, a correspondent on RC Groups, www.rcgroups.com, has asserted that
ScaleAndTile is a derivative work under the iText LGPL, because it "uses" the
iText library, while this author's opinion is that it is a separate work. The
"derivative vs. separate work" issue is significant, as parts of ScaleAndTile
are under consideration for incorporation in the iText Toolbox, which is now
distributed under the less restrictive so-called MIT license. This author has
deliberately packaged ScaleAndTile separately from the iText library to protect
the author's rights to establish the license (LGPL, MPL, or MIT) under which it
is ultimately distributed
So, the question for licensing experts is "Is ScaleAndTile a derivative work,
just because it "uses" the iText library; or is ScaleAndTile a separate work,
because it is not packaged with the iText library?"
