I think I experienced the same problem with PDF files newer than PDF 1.4 that had the xref table in compressed form. As you may know PDF Renderer was an old closed source project brought into open source. It was build for PDF 1.4 (the current version is 1.7). Plenty of post 1.4 functionality isn't supported in PDF Renderer. How to solve it?
