iText can generate 'normal PDF' as well as PDF/A and PDF/X.
Doesn't it say in your assignment which standard you have
to adhere to?

The A in PDF/A stands for Archiving.
The X in PDF/X stands for blind eXchange.

With iText you can tell the writer to throw an exception
whenever you use some functionality or some feature that
is not allowed according to the standard you chose.
