You should do some more research about the difference between image formats and find a java toolkit for working with images (which is what 1t3xt info has been suggesting in his own demented way). iText is not going to change the image or reduce the number of bytes. You need to use some other image toolkit to resize the image, maybe reduce the quality a little, to get it to the size and quality that's acceptable, before adding it to the document.
