I am using JDK 1.5.0_05.
What capability will I miss if I don't have rups?

PDF renderer is compiled with a more recent JDK.
The core iText and iText for RTF can be compiled with JDK 1.4.
RUPS needs at least JDK 1.5.

However: you needn't worry about that; you probably don't need RUPS.
