Ok, thanks for pointing me in the general direction of the three Java apps
that look as though they will do what I want. However the documentation is
all about using them in a Java context and not from the command line. I'm
going to muddle about and try different things.

Firstly, on a brand new Debian install, what are the best versions of Java
(JRE) to run and do I need to do anything similar to setting the 'CLASSPATH'
environment variable on Windows?
