I'm responding again because I think there is honest confusion over various
"things" ( technical term LOL) that can be in a file versus on the screen
and what to expect in what software packages. Someone asked earlier about
string replacement, and certainly many credible respected users of information
find it useful to manipulate text ( invitation to flame ), but this seems
to be a bit involved due to the nature of a PDF file.
Typesetting, "flowing" a document according to some rules, effects,
images and charts, have very little connection with the underlying words
in many cases and these "Words" can be represented in a number of ways.
Image manipulation, the creation of art, is something for a design package
not a general set of tools to work with a specific file format-
in this case itext and PDF.
I almost wish you would put a drug-like disclaimer on PDF authoring
tools, " Controlled clinical trials have demonstrated that PDF's are
a safe and effective treatment option for some types of visual information.
PDF's are not for everyone. If you have information best represented
as text, use a text based format. Some people have experienced severe side
effects from use of PDF including bloating, bandwidth cramps, and discomfort.
Ask your IT professional before deciding that PDF is right for you."
To answer your question, I think ImageMagick may have some effects but
I have never used these AFAIK. Swiss army knives ( tight pacakages
that does everything ) are nice but even there you need to find the right one.
I actually felt dumb for not suggesting this myself but someone else
cited JAI ( See java advanced imaging on sun.com ) as an option and it is easy
to get pixels and right your
own image code in java.
