the Reader tells every detail about your problem :
Usually a certificate contains information where to find revocation lists or
where to check the Online certificate status ( OCSP ). In most certificates you
find both information. I'm don't know where the certificate comes from you use
on your card. Is it a blank smart card and you put your own certificate on it ?
In this case you need your own CA. I prefer EJBCA.
If you got the card prefilled with the certificate, then you out of luck ! Use
another CA ;-)

pdfStamper = PdfStamper.createSignature(pdfReader, null, '\0', outputFile);
PdfSignatureAppearance sap = pdfStamper.getSignatureAppearance();
sap.setCrypto(key, chain, null, PdfSignatureAppearance.SELF_SIGNED);
