I think you are being too general in your reply.
Of course it is possible to interpret embedded fonts that use
custom mappings.
If he creates a mapping for each font that maps the
characters to the ascii character that corresponds to the letter drawn by
each glyph.
It's a simple substitution cypher where he can easily obtain the mapping
by creating a pdf that displays all glyphs that he is interested in.

The downside is that you need to create the mapping for each font.
