System.gc() gives a strong hint to the JVM, which it can act on when
it's ready. System.gc() may have no immediate impact, but it usually
doesn't hurt to call it after a large block of memory goes out of
scope, especially if you have a few CPU cycles to burn. Used
judiciously, System.gc() can be a useful tool. It won't have any
effect on static strong references.

its made, then re-use the reference (rather than collecting them in
a list).
The PermGen memory leak has me worried though. iText-2.1.5.jar
classes are suspected of holding static references that can't be gc'd.
