If you want to read the iText book, read "iText in Action - Second Edition":

Manning is trying to fix this.
I suspect that Amazon wants to sell its copies of the first edition,
and therefore misleads its customers by presenting the new cover
for the old book (the first edition is more than 4 years old).
However: the book won't tell you that much about PDF/A,
you'll still need to read ISO-190005 (about PDF/A).
I'm currently working my way through the draft of ISO-19005-3.1
(currently only available to members of standard bodies).
