I guess you could stick to 1.3, but you shouldn't expect any support for
such an old version (it's almost 6 years old).
I strongly suggest you to upgrade to the latest version (5.0.6). You'll then
find plenty of examples and extensive documentation for this version, either
online or in the 2nd edition of iText in Action.
