That answer is obsolete.

In 2007, a thorough IP review has been performed on behalf of Actuate,
IBM, The Eclipse Foundation.
Another IP review has been done before we moved from iText 2.1.7 to
iText 5.0.0.
We're currently in the process of a third audit on the source code for
iText 5.1.x.
For more info contact sales: http://itextpdf.com/terms-of-use/

The 2.1.7 and previous releases of iText have been removed from
SourceForge and should no longer be used.
Why not? Let me use the words of James Gosling:

GET WITH THE PROGRAM. UPGRADE!
Don't let iText 2.1.7 be the bane of (y)our existence.
