You can change the version number in the header, but that won't "downgrade" all the 1.4 functionality that is used in the PDF. Your client's interpretation of their problem is probably wrong. Unfortunately for you, it's YOUR client, not OURS. Please don't expect us to find to work for your client in your place for free.
