There is such a thing as an image field from the users perspective, if you
use Adobe LiveCycle Designer you will clearly see an "Image Field" object in
the library.

The "image field" value exists as a base64 encoded string.

I haven't tried retrieving one but I have certainly populated it
successfully. You could try retrieving the string value and then convert the
string to an image.  You will find many examples of this for your language
of choice on the web.
