I took the OP's word for iTextSharp failing here. Oh well...

Anyway, I still wonder whether that fix is ok that way. If an indirect
object may have a naked object reference as content, such an object in an
object stream most likely will now be mis-interpreted by iText.

Such a stack trace appears in iText/Java before 5.0.3, too, when trying to
read that full document --- some after-effect of the failure to read the
object stream.
