I would strongly advise against excluding anything but the signature
container from the signed ranges. While arbitrary byte ranges are allowed by
ISO 32000-1, the PAdES style signatures explicitly require that "the
ByteRange shall cover the entire file, including the signature dictionary
but excluding the PDF Signature itself" (and this restriction will also be
respected in ISO 32000-2). Additionally Adobe Acrobat and Reader have been
rejecting byte ranges covering less data for quite some time now.
Furthermore many PDF signature verification programs expect the byte ranges
array to contain exactly 4 values, i.e. only one gap.

Regards, Michael
