I haven't used but I recommend LuaSockets:
http://w3.impa.br/~diego/software/luasocket/
It is independent from the IUP main loop.
In IUP you can implement the loop for receiving data in two forms, using
an idle callback or using a timer. You can also use multithread, but it is
more complex to handle.
