Hello, all--

I am attempting to build im, cd, and iup on a 32-bit Arch Linux
system. The Arch Build System (ABS) involves scripts that download a
source package, compile it, and repackage the resulting binary. Also,
after downloading the source package, the system obtains checksums
(usually sha1sum these days) of the downloaded files, and compares
them with the checksums recorded by the package maintainer.

Here's what happened when I tried to build im:

[matt@localhost im]$ makepkg
==> Making package: im 3.8.1-1 (Sat May 11 12:06:20 MDT 2013)
==> Checking runtime dependencies...

  0   397    0     0    0     0      0      0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:--     0
100 38768  100 38768    0     0  27983      0  0:00:01  0:00:01 --:--:--  179k

    im-3.8.1_Sources.tar.gz ... FAILED
==> ERROR: One or more files did not pass the validity check!

I manually compared the sha1sum, and indeed it was wrong. Then I
thought that maybe it was just a bad download, so I tried again, and
the same thing happened. Looked at the checksum again, and it was
different from the first time. Then I tried several more times with
im, cd, and iup, and I found:

The tarballs for im, cd, and iup are different each time I download
them (I also used 'cmp' to compare some of the tarballs, and also
found differences doing that).

Does anyone know why this is happening?
