Yes, in tecmake.mak line 1040 states:

The internal LUA_SFX is controlled by the LUA_SUFFIX variable. For non
LuaBinaries this is empty. This is described in "Building Lua, IM, CD and
IUP in Linux".
LUA_BIN can be defined also to point to the Lua installation path. This
is missing in the documentation, but because it is optional. It is
necessary only if you are changing the Lua files of the library and needs
to rebuild their .lh respective file. I'll add a note.
export LUA_BIN=/usr/bin
Best,
Scuri
To (mis)quote an old song: "You Better, You Better, You Best!"
With the build environment now set to:
export LUA_SUFFIX=
export LUA_INC=/usr/include/lua5.1
export LUA_BIN=/usr/bin
the IM build now works on a Linux Mint 18.3 (Sylvia) system.
So, THANK YOU! for sorting out this stoppage in the IM build.

I was hoping that I'd quickly get to a complete build of all of
IM, CD and IUP, and be able to participate in the upcoming IUP
release, but other glitches in the build (e.g. weirdness in CD
that I believe is my fault) remain despite the IM fix. So, in
practice, I'll retire into the background for a while.
cheers,
