i see that postgres has gotten some of this treament (php53u-pgsql and php53u-pgsql84). i think i found some old discussion of this online, but i wonder if it could be revisisted? more and more packages are picking specific combinations of php and mysql versions and it would be nice to be able to create virtual machines with the right combo without needing to jump through too many hoops. i don't know if it is feasible to do that in one build, or if each php would need to be built multiple times for each mysql version. i guess i could dig into how the pgsql is done now to get an idea while i'm waiting for the list to respond...
