Wild guess: the sound card is muted. There has been problems recently
with this (fix is forthcoming).
How to check if this is the case:
pactl list sinks
That will print the list of output devices. Check the "Mute:" field. If
it says "yes", unmute with this command:
pactl set-sink-mute NAME false
NAME is the sink name as indicated by the "Name:" field in the pactl
list output.
