Thanks to those that replied. I think I became confused between the Xv 
playback options in mythtv, and discussions on this list about using 
mplayer. The solution was quite simple - a case of flipping an option 
in MythTV.

Like the other posters in this thread, I now have great playback of 
MPEG2 (low CPU, smooth video, audio in sync) using either DVB or 
PVR-350 as a source. Yes, there are some issues with image size, but I 
expect those are limitations in MythTV rather than ivtv.

For the record, I built RPMs of ivtv and the xdriver from svn HEAD, for 
FC4. Many thanks to John Harvey and the other ivtv/xdriver developers.
