I have tried unsuccessfully from many sources to find a solution for my problem while recording from VHS. I hope this list can help.

The bottom of the picture I am receiving from the VCR has a wavy, pulsating line. I have tried both mythtv and ptune record with the same result.

Do I understand this correctly, you're plugged in a VCR to the S-video port and are playing something that you have recorded from the TV through the card?

If so then I think that your seeing the teletext stuff. I'm not quite as far as you in this respect but I've taken VCR recording and written them to DVDs but then I'm using a Matrox RT.X100 Xtreme card to capture the composite signal but the software only runs on Windows. However I always get a bit of junk at the bottom.

Someone said that it was because of the 480 scanlines coming from the VCR. He suggested using the crop filter in mythtv. However this does not work with my pvr 250 card.

I think that I read somewhere that you can reencode mythtv recording to DivX/Xvid using mencoder, maybe you can crop the screen here. Sorry but I've only done this with Avisynth.

I did an ivtvctl -a and noticed that in VIDIOC_G_FMT the Video Capture height is 480. I am not sure if this is a measure of scan lines or something else. Under VIDIOC_ENUMSTD for NTSC the frame lines are 525. Can this number be changed to correspond with the scan lines from the VHS? Is there a connection?

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Duncan
