Just realized that I may have been a bit ambiguous above. To be crystal
clear:

Now that I can select "Audio Line In" (with "ivtvctl -q1"), I /do/ 
get stereo sound through /it/, and thus am able to capture the best 
 (least blurred) video (Cable/antenna input - "ivtvctl -p4") along with
 the obviously preferred stereo "Line In".

It is when I do not switch to the alternative audio, that I (still) get
mono, particularly with an externally pre-tuned channel fed into
the Hauppauge Channel 3, via the antenna input (don't know the technical
 terminology for "pre-tuned channel").
