I have tried both, switching completely off and back on, (including waiting several minutes while off just to "make sure"), and just doing reboots (/sbin/shutdown -r now). Doesn't seem to make a real difference which I do.
I did investigate the > > ivtv0: Failed to load module tda9887 line, and evidently I'd never ran a depmod -a -- I mistakenly thought that it ran on boot, but anyways after running depmod, tda9887 loads properly. It doesn't make any difference on the resulting captions though. I've got a 1 minute clip of the "evidence" that I'll post with my new ivtv dmesg dump later today. Thanks all so far!
