I even double checked via experiment the change to tuner_stereo(), and that empirically appears to be correct as well despite what the TAPE-H091F datasheet says! I was concerned because according to the TAPE-H091F datasheet, AFC voltage level from the TDA9887 is present on the TUNER_SIGNAL bits, not stereo indication. See the last sentence on page 2 and the bottom half of page 13 of the TAPE-H091F datasheet. After experimentation with the only 5 FM mono stations available near me and numerous stereo stations, I will tentatively conclude conclude that stereo indication is indeed on the TUNER_SIGNAL bits with a value of TUNER_STEREO_MK3 for the TAPE-H0x1x tuners, and not AFC voltage.
