replying to the above, a year and a half later...

the above mplayer command works for me but, obviously, has limitations such as:

* no pausing, ff-ing, etc. 
* playing a dvd from a dvd drive only. (I tried the above with *.vob files 
stored on the hard drive and got choppy audio - any suggestions here are 
welcomed. However...)

enticed by the above AND by messages about the xine plugin, i came up with a 
wishlist item that may or may not already exist.

If not the latter, how feasible would it be to develop such a feature?  And 
would one retain the Xine controls with the slider, pausing and all that, while
