Hmmmm.... cat /dev/video0 > /mnt/store/test.mpg Results in 700-900Mb file (soft raid5 on a pci sata card) cat /dev/video0 > /tmp/test.mpg Results in a 2685077440b (second attempt 2685026240b) file (SiS Onboard ide) The thing is though while I can see that congestion over the pci bus could cause problems during a cat of /dev/video0 why would it be an issue with dd if=/dev/video0 of=/dev/video16 bs=64k ?? Actually thinking about that, I would suppose that dd if=/dev/video0 of=/dev/video16 bs=64k would still be as bad as copying to an offboard ide controller. The logical progression of that is that if dd between device nodes works then copying to the offboard ide drives _should_ work. :-) Except dd doesn't work :-( A _very_ quick calculation shows the file to be building at aprox 1.2Mb/s, the PCI bandwidth is 127Mb/s, there has to be some overhead there but even so that should be using 1%-2% of the available bandwidth Also while the cat /dev/video0 to the offboard controller was recoverable the one to the onboard controller while lasting for longer needed the ivtv module to be unloaded and reloaded before it would work again. I've got another cat going at the moment with the debug level set to 255 anyway but the output of dmesg I'm getting at the moment is below.
