Because the checkbox for that option (myth gui in a window) is outside the screen, I couldn't see, if the option is enabled, but I've tried to toggle it with the arrow keys without any affect. I'm using KDE as window manager, but this evening I will try another window manager or try it without a window manager as mentioned by John.
As for working round the overscan it depends on what you want. I run X with no window manager and then change the overscan settings in mythtv.
I found that part of myth's setup, where I can change the size and the offset of myth's GUI, but changing the offset has no affect.
Depending on your choice of window manager, you might have to select the option to run mythfrontend in a window to get the offset to have an effect. If so, you can disable the decorations on the Myth window and you won't even know that it's inside a window.
