I have the same experience, it's only when recording from a tape...

I'm grasping straws here but could this have anything to do with macrovision protection?

I doubt it... I never got around to cutting Macrovision a check to protect my home movies on 8mm... ;)

It *does* seem to be related to different cuts on the tape, however. It was basically a Sony 8mm camcorder that probably did some nasty things when it starts/stops a recording. There was no TBC involved (of course), although it was 1st generation. I'll bet it's the saa7114 chip losing a video frame or line or a "vcr_hack" smart-sync issue that causes a glitch in the timing. The iv15/iv16 chip then has to deal with it by manipulating the PTS. (just a guess, but it seems reasonable).
