I was compiling Device Drivers->Mulimedia
Devices->Video for Linux->BT848 and Conexant 2388x
into the kernel rather than setting them as modules.

Either one (or both)--as long as they're modules. You just need to
select one of them so the tuner module is built.

a problem? Perhaps the stuff at the bottom regarding

Nope. Everything's perfect. Black capture--instead of "white noise"
a.k.a. "static"--indicates a capture from an input that's not connected
to anything (and usually an S-Video or Composite input). Did you do an
"ivtvctl -p 4" before the capture? You can also do an "ivtvctl
--list-inputs" to see the list of inputs (count them starting with index
0 to arrive at the appropriate "-p" value).
