So it's not obvious. 
Things to look at

1) Is something burning a lot of CPU when it's in this state?
2) Are you sure its not just something stange with Virtual Terminal
switching? Try switching to and from the vt used by X
3) Can you enable more ivtv debugging and then post the messages file again
(Everything except irq (0xbf I think but that's from memory).
