I should clarify.  Although, maybe you've already caught on.  I guess
the X server must be doing something.  Because if the ivtv_fb isn't
loaded, I get an error saying it can't start X when Linux is trying to
start.  On the other hand, if I just change my xorg.conf file and
CTRL-ALT-BKSPACE, everything goes dead.  So maybe it IS crashing. 
It's largely the same when I use the initrd thing.  But I'm shying
away from that for the moment.  When I did that, something went wrong
and I lost sound from the captures.  So, anyhow...

I haven't looked through the log.  Because I'm too ignorant.  The only
thing that seemed interesting was:
(WW) ivtvdev: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:8:0) found
(WW) ivtvdev: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:10:0) found
(EE) No devices detected.

So maybe my xorg.conf is has the BusID wrong.  I'll play with that and
see what happens.
