Actually, resolution has absolutely no effect on capture size. It's bitrate that drives file size. Both this topic, and the topic of why 480x480 NTSC is essentially the same as 720x480 NTSC on a non-HDTV set have come up many times, and Isaac corrects people all the time.

After I understood those issues, I intentionally changed my stock Myth setup from 480x480 to 720x480 but left the bitrate the same (so my captures are still the same file size) to make it simpler to author to DVD when I want to. (489x489 isn't a native DVD resolution but most players will play it, however that's a whole other topic). Now the downside is, if I show those DVD's on something capable of HDTV, you can notice the low-ish bitrate (6Kbps isn't that low), but on a regular set, they look great.
